The Cobb Symphony is celebrating the opening of the Georgia Center for the Arts with a Day of the Arts on Saturday, August 23 at the Murray Arts Center (formerly the Dozier Center). Hillgrove Orchestras have been invited to provide concessions during the celebration. We will earn 100% of the profits from this event. All money earned will be used to offset the Cobb Symphony field trip on Thursday, September 11. We need students and parents to help during the hours of 9 am to 5 pm this Saturday, August 23rd. We will also need a couple of large coolers for drinks and as well as a large crockpot. Please contact Rita Cyrier by phone at 678-938-0258 or by email at alancyrier@msn.com with the hours you will be available or if you can lend a cooler or crockpot for the day.

Orchestra Calendar Fundraiser Information
Pocket Calendar Sale Fundraiser
Orchestra students have a fantastic opportunity to earn money to pay for their Orchestra fees and uniforms. This is the first of our fundraisers for the year and because these are 2008-09 school year calendars, our selling time is short. These calendars list all Cobb County School District dates, as well as important Hillgrove HS dates (i.e., football games, concerts, plays, testing dates, etc.). The calendars are great to have as a quick reference when planning events. Everyone should have one in their purse or car! These were great sellers last year and last year’s customers are already asking for them.
The pocket calendars sell for $5.00 each. And, unlike most fundraisers, the students gets credit for the whole $5.00. Thank You to our sponsors, the UPS Store, Eagle Vending (our school vending machines), and Andy Perry of One Source Mortgage!! So, if a student sells 10 calendars @ $5.00 each, he/she has earned $50 for his/her Individual Student Account. The monies in this account can be used to pay for Orchestra fees, uniforms, spirit wear, or orchestra trips. There is a limited number of calendars available for sell, so get your orders in quickly. We will not reorder calendars and orders will be filled on a first come/first served basis.
To participate, a check or money order must be received for the number of calendars you want your student to be given (example: 5 calendars require a $25.00 check). The check/money order will be held until August 30th at which time the money from the calendars as well as unsold calendars (returned in excellent condition) will be due. If payment or unsold calendars are not returned by August 30th, the check or money order will be deposited. If all money and/or calendars are returned, we will void or return your original check. Checks should be made to the Hillgrove Orchestra Booster Club, put into an envelope with the order form and dropped into the mailbox in Mr. Doke’s office. The mailbox will be checked daily, with calendars distributed the following day. Remember, there is a limited number of calendars available for sale. Deadline is August 30th because our Bruster’s Coupon Booklet Sale will begin in September and is yet another way to earn money to offset your Orchestra expenses. Happy Selling!

A Message from the HOBC Executive Board
The Hillgrove Orchestra Booster Club is pleased to extend a warm welcome to you as we look forward to the 2008-2009 school year. We are very excited about the strides we’ve made in only two years but we are still a ‘work in progress’ and need your help to become an even better support organization for our orchestra students .
If you are a current booster club member or will be joining as your student enters high school in the 2008-2009 school year we need your help. The current board has served for two years and according to the by-laws we must elect new officers. Elections will be held at our first meeting in August.
Both Mr. Doke and the current board believe the transition can be best achieved by electing junior co-officers for each board position to work alongside the current members (senior co-officers) for one year. The following year new junior co-officers will then be elected. By having elections for the junior co-officer positions yearly the board will always have seasoned officers (senior co-officers) in place to train the new board. This being our first year under the new system, the senior co-officers will be nominated by the Orchestra director. The board positions include the following:
Senior Co-President –
Junior Co-President – new nominee (2 year term)
Senior Co-Vice President –
Junior Co-Vice President – new nominee (2 year term)
Senior Co-Secretary –
Junior Co-Secretary – new nominee (2 year term)
Senior Co-Treasurer –
Junior Co-Treasurer – new nominee (2 year term)
We will also need to fill other non-board positions, which we are recommending also to be co-chaired for the first year to ease the burden on any one person, as follows:
Co-Membership chair
Co-Fundraising chair
On average, the board meets four times during the school year, in addition to attending the booster club general meetings. The board works closely with Mr. Doke to plan the orchestra activities for the school year and to make decisions regarding policy and procedure. More detailed information about the booster club (mission statement, goals, etc.) is attached for ease of reference.
If you are interested in joining the leadership team to share in the growth and development of the orchestra program, please contact us at hobc@bellsouth.net or call Eric Wright (Co-President) at 770-490-6641. We look forward to hearing from you. More information about HOBC is available under the “pages” section in the right column of this blog under HOBC.
Sincerely,
HOBC Orchestra Board Members
